    A mixed-flow pump is a type of impeller-driven pump that falls between centrifugal and axial-flow pumps.

    Working principle

    The prime mover drives the pump shaft to rotate, causing the impeller to turn with it; the blades do work on the liquid. As the liquid enters the impeller at the suction inlet, it is propelled radially outward by centrifugal force and simultaneously pushed axially by the blades. The superposition of these two motions results in the liquid exiting the impeller at an oblique angle, entering either the volute or the guide vanes. After a portion of its kinetic energy is converted into pressure energy, the fluid flows out through the pump discharge pipeline.

    Structural features

    It is primarily composed of an impeller, pump casing, guide vanes, shaft, bearings, and sealing devices. The impeller blades adopt a configuration intermediate between those of centrifugal and axial‑flow pumps, featuring both a bending angle and an inclination angle. Pump casings come in two forms—volute‑type and cylindrical—used respectively in volute‑type mixed‑flow pumps and guide‑vane‑type mixed‑flow pumps.

    Performance Features

    The flow rate is moderate to relatively high, exceeding that of conventional centrifugal pumps; the head typically ranges from 5 to 20 meters, higher than that of axial-flow pumps but lower than that of multistage centrifugal pumps; it boasts high efficiency with a broad optimal operating range, achieving efficiencies above 80% under design conditions; and it exhibits favorable cavitation performance, allowing for a relatively high allowable suction lift.
